Much agreed re the mixing of forms, but in fact the meanings of the
characters ("Sinograms" is a really handy way to call them, versus the much
longer "Chinese characters"; did you invent the term?) are all fully
understandable in Chinese. 赤 and 犬 both are still current, and still mean
"red" and "dog" in Chinese.
