Two advantages of LiveJournal over much other forum software is (a)
email notification of comments, making it easier to detect responses
to your comments and to carry on a conversation in comments on
entries, and (b) threaded comments so that you can see who responded
to whom (a tree-structure, rather than the linear structure ordered by
date commonly found in many other web forums).

Of course, (a) is offered by mailing lists, too, and (b) may be,
depending on your email client.
