I suspect that the community is liable to be small enough that
splitting it up into one group that's mainly conversing on the mailing
list and another that's mainly conversing on LiveJournal would be
injurious.

Also, I reckon all of us know how to use a mailing list, but not all
of us have LiveJournal accounts and know how to post there.

What exactly are the advantages of LiveJournal over a mailing list for
a project like this?

True of a conlang.org mailing list too.

That could be useful, though we could also store pictures on
FrathWiki, where the MediaWiki software would probably be more useful
long-term for organizing a large amount of comments on Kēlen and texts
in Kēlen than a LiveJournal community with tags on posts.

You can put links in plain-text email to a mailing list and most email
clients will allow the reader to click on it.
